Dr. Shepard obtained his PhD in Biology from UC Irvine in 2011. At UCI, Dr. Shepard was a recipient of the Bioinformatics Training Grant award through the Institute of Genomic Biology an interdisciplinary program focused on cross-training students in the life and computational sciences. During the course of his doctoral work, Dr. Shepard used computational methods to study mechanisms regulating the process of alternative splicing in the laboratory of Dr. Klemens Hertel and devised a method using high throughput sequencing to quantitatively identify novel polyadenylation sites and measure the expression of alternatively polyadenylated isoforms in the laboratory of Dr. Yongsheng Shi. Prior to focusing on Computational Biology, Dr. Shepard spent a number of years at the bench researching breast cancer in the biotechnology industry. Dr. Shepard joined the Frazer lab in March 2012.

In addition to his PhD, Dr. Shepard earned a Computational Biology degree from New York University (MS) and a Biological Sciences degree from the University of California at Riverside (BS).
